Poetry. "These merciless and irresistible poems fuse into a landscape of intimate close-ups, whether of buffalo bellowing their dominance in Yellowstone, the touch of the wife's hands covered with dough, or the gravestone of the poet's brother. For lovers of nature and of this harsh and amazing earthly life, this book is a feast of bracing, supple imagery that's the opposite of the anemic and academic. These poems live; they breathe; they show off the trophies of their scars."—Oriana Ivy
Landscape of a Woman and a Hummingbird Joseph Milosch Books
Recently attended one of Joseph Milosch’s readings. A colleague and friend remarked, "Joe is a salt of the earth guy". A shared impression. And his poetry emanates from that way of being- speaks with that voice. No pretense. No artifice. Modest. Respectful. Honest. “Landscape of a Woman and a Hummingbird” is mournful without being morbid. Often, haiku in tone, but free from the English 5/7/5 syllable formalism, Milosch’s poems honor with a clear seeing of the ordinary, sensitive to irony without a facile descent into sarcasm . No judgement; no preaching. There is this comfort with ambiguity - the grey - an existentialist with a light hand. From “Landscape of a Childhood”: In late autumn, I cut across/ corn fields to trees, screening/ the edges of a beaver pond; // eventually, I found a stump/ and sat to watch the snow fall/ as I smelled the last of autumn.
We need more poets like Joe. Hell, we need more people like Joe.

Landscape of a Woman and a Hummingbird Joseph Milosch Books Reviews
Joe Milosch’s poems resonate with an earthy honesty. He writes about people who plant their fingers in the earth, about a working class man who meets a woman in a bar and finds out her boyfriend is a neoNazi, about a woman making salsa and an old man wiping tobacco spit from his chin, about blizzards shaking window glass, while a mother feeds her baby, about brown bones with sand dollar patterns. Milosch, like all good poets, seeks large truths in small things.
