American Heritage History of the United States eBook Douglas G Brinkley
Author David Brinkley had no delusions that the job of summarizing 500 years of American history in about as many pages would be easy. "Obviously, the story of the United States is far too grand and sweeping to capture between two covers,or even a few hundred covers," he writes in introducing his one-volume "History of the United States." He anticipated the criticism that would come from selecting which snippets to include -- or not. Ultimately, he decided that it was a challenge that, though daunting, would reward his own keen interest in the people and events that have shaped his world. His reward is ours, too. The result is a quick, easy and compelling read covering a timeline that stretches from Christopher Columbus' discovery in 1492 to the precipice of the 21st century. Key milestones appear as bright and dark fragments of glass in a tremendous mosaic. Written with perspective, welded together to serve the bigger picture, and sprinkled with character and humor, this is a page-turner of a book. "More accessible -- and less dreary" was Brinkley's goal, and he has achieved that.As a fellow Ohioan just beginning to discover a passion for history, I related to the curiosity and the studiousness with which Brinkley worked to inject life into the textbooks and lectures that, for most of us, are our first exposure to the unique American story. This book is not the comprehensive guide, nor the last word on American history. But it very well may be the first word -- a beginning for someone curious to learn more about this nation that is as multifaceted as its people and cultures. The central character here is America, and we see her through a wide lens. Even the most amazing of her movers and shakers are reduced to, at best, a handful of pages. But this book should be -- and is -- an impetus to delve further, to continue this journey of discovery. This is a great place to start.
Updated for its conversion to ebook format, the book has been newly edited to resolve many of the problems cited with earlier versions, including some outdated references. This ebook version is also text-only, though embedded links offer quick and easy access to web resources that include photographs.

American Heritage History of the United States eBook Douglas G Brinkley Reviews
I bought this as a daily deal for 1.99 and it is certainly worth that. Dr. Brinkley is a 1st rate historian. However, there are no illustrations in the version that I purposefully downloaded to a Fire thinking there would be. Be forewarned!
Although the author states right up front that this one volume history is not a "comprehensive history of our nation's origins and developments," it seems to me that all the essential aspects of America's story are discussed.
The author begins the story in a Europe which is struggling with vast political and religious upheaval. The author weaves his way through the narrative and finishes in modern times. All the key events and personalities are here in sharp, well written prose. Overall, the book is a good one volume account of America's growth and development.
However, I was disappointed that the author's view of every event was driven and determined solely by economic factors. I fully recognize the importance of economics in framing historical events and shaping individuals motivations. There are, I believe, a multitude of complex factors that influence people's actions and reactions. I felt that the author focused on economics as not only one factor, but the ONLY factor in the growth our nation, to the detriment of other, equally important issues. As such, I found the book somewhat myopic and narrow.
No sooner than I had finished Paul Johnson's A History of The American People, I downloaded Douglas Brinkley's American Heritage History of The United States. The two books could not have been more different and complimentary, while equally worthy of 5 stars. I did not review Mr. Johnson's book because it is an older and frequently reviewed book. The difference between the two books is as wide as the author's differing claims for the motivating factor which resulted in the foundation of the United States. I guess Jesus was right when he said that you cannot serve both God and Mammon. While Mr. Johnson devotes a great deal of effort to establish the point that the United States was founded as a city on a hill shining God's light on the world and extensively discusses the influence of the Great Awakening on the American revolution, Mr. Brinkley claims that the main impetus for the foundation of the United States was purely and entirely economic. In fact, he goes on to claim that economics is the main motivating force for all of Homo sapiens' endeavors from the beginning of time. While I am a born-again Christian, I have become a bit more skeptical over my lifetime about the Christian underpinnings of the US and tend to side with Mr. Brinkley, although I suspect the truth is somewhere in between. While Mr. Johnson's book sags in places due to his penchant for the presentation of seemingly interminable statistics to prove his points, Mr. Brinkley's book suffers no such issues with pace and serves as a very enjoyable if occasionally breezy history of our great country. He gives a very balanced and fair discussion of the controversial figures in recent history (Nixon and Clinton) and injects some humor through quotations such as the Lyndon Johnson football quote about Gerald Ford. One of my only disappointments is the almost complete absence of a discussion of America's massive undertaking to successfully place a man on the moon in the 60's and the great technological innovations and improvements brought on by the space program . It mystifies me that arguably the greatest specific accomplishment of our democracy, besides the great general accomplishment of serving as a model and magnet for the world, gets virtually no mention in a history of our country. Despite this flaw, I highly recommend it.
All the reviews of this book speak of its richness in useful pictures (almost one on every page), which is one of the reasons I purchased it. However, the version is only text. Beware!
